The event is funded by Scottish Rugby’s ‘Return to Rugby’ investment programme. The Kick Start grant provided funding to Aberdeen Wanderers for ‘Everyone’s Game’ activities and to support and highlight the return of the sport as it emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Guy Mullinor, President of Aberdeen Wanderers RFC, says, “We spent such a long time as a club not being able to be out on the field during lockdown, whether that was simply training or in a competitive match. It was really hard for all of the team, club staff and volunteers. Everyone felt such a void without the sport. We are delighted that Scottish Rugby has invested £6.5 million to support grassroots rugby and to support community clubs in Scotland as the sport emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic. The Kick Start Programme which supports our ‘Return to Rugby’ event is in place to retain players and find new members as well as coaches, volunteers, match officials and support staff.

Guy continues, “The family fun will be a day of sport, food, great fun and really bring a sense of community back to the club. It is open to all ages, abilities and gender and is a chance to enjoy the health and social benefits of rugby and to find out more about what the club has to offer. We are really looking forward to shining a spotlight on the sport and our club once again.”

Célia Veyron La Croix, Treasurer for Aberdeen Wanderers RFC, says, “We really look forward to welcoming girls/women from across Aberdeen and Shire to come and see what the club is about and trial out the sport. We are encouraged that more and more women are showing an interest in the game, and we want them to know that there are local clubs and memberships available to them, right here in the city. It is such an accessible sport and provides key life skills such as teamwork, communication, confidence and respect.”

Rudi Urbach, Director of the Caledonia North region at Scottish Rugby, said: “It’s fantastic to see Aberdeen Wanderers use their Kick Start grant funding to deliver an event which demonstrates their commitment to creating an inclusive environment by promoting the positive cultures, values and behaviours within our sport across the communities they serve.

The club offers something for everyone to enjoy – boys and girls, young and old and this event will highlight their focus on community development and participation. I’m confident the event will give those in attendance multiple opportunities to enjoy the social, physical and mental health benefits of rugby and find out more about what the club has to offer.

Whilst it’s important to recognise the need to remain cautious because of the nature of coronavirus, seeing the club welcome back their members, volunteers and local community with such enthusiasm is a positive step forward.
